Here are some details about the friendly-faces that have made The Write Workshop what it is today:
Belinda Bradley (President)
Favourite Book(s)/Author(s):
Cassandra Clare, J.M Barrie, Lucy Saxon and Phillip Pullman.
Fictional Role Model:
Hit Girl from Kickass, need I say more!
What is Writing to You?
Writing for me is being able to experience life through different perspectives in such a way that defies a standard glance at reality. It creates an escape that most people crave so that our world is either unrecognisable or comforting in its relatability. Therefore I would regard it as a crucial form of art that impacts everybody’s lives.
Five Themes I Am Passionate On Writing About:
Activism, Endurance, Supernatural, Adventure, Comedy.
Matthew Delicate (Vice-President)
Favourite Book(s)/Author(s):
Philip K Dick, Andrzej Sapkowski, and Drew Karphyshyn’s Mass Effect series (okay I’m a nerd, bite me!)
Fictional Role Model:
Currently I’d say Jim Hopper (aka ‘Hop’) from Stranger Things. He’s the epitome of human resilience, having dealt with the immense grief of losing his daughter and despite not having much to fight for he tries harder than anyone else in his community to do good, even when the odds are stacked massively against him.
What is Writing to You?
To write is to take people out of their lives, just for a moment, and place them in multiple people’s shoes. Not only have you provided escapism to the stress in their lives, but more importantly opened their minds into seeing things from someone else’s eyes in a relatable way. It’s a stranger fulfilling another stranger’s curiosity.
Five Themes I Am Passionate On Writing About:
Technology, Empathy, Romance (in an artfully subtle way), Loyalty, Animals.
Jacob Bathgate (Vice-President)
Favourite Book(s)/Author(s):
Margaret Atwood (her short stories are to die for) & Alan Moore’s graphic novel ‘Watchmen’.
Fictional Role Model:
Imperator Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road. She represents total, raw, unhinged determination like no other character I know. Plus, she’s just badass.
What is Writing to You?
Writing is a superpower. Through a collection of ink lines in specific shapes, I have the power to incept a concept previously unthought directly into the minds of potentially millions of other people. Kneel before my might ~evil laugh~
Five Themes I Am Passionate On Writing About:
The Human Condition, Philosophy, Comedy, Destiny, Metaphysics.
Katie Cheetham (Social Secretary)
Favourite Book(s)/Author(s):
The Nightingale Floor by Liam Hearn.
Fictional Role Model:
Constance (from the BBC series of Three Musketeers) as she’s a strong female character who displays courage in adversity. She leads a moral life and her drive for love is something that resonates with me. She’s a total badass to be honest, and I’d like to be her in that era.
Five Themes I Am Passionate On Writing About:
Climate Change, Nature, Animals, Travel and Mythology.
Andrew Lewis (Social Secretary)
Favourite Book(s)/Author(s):
My favourite book is ‘The Bell Jar’ by Sylvia Plath, but my favourite authors are: David Levithan, Nicci French, Nina Lacour and Elan Mastai.
Fictional Role Model:
Gone Girl (watch out future partners!)
What is Writing to You?
For me, writing is a way to make my constant daydreaming sound useful. Reading is a way to daydream with other people’s stories.
Five Themes I Am Passionate On Writing About:
LGBT stories, isolation, the human mind, romance, offbeat stories.
Veslemøy Stavdahl (Treasurer)
Favourite Book(s)/Author(s):
John William’s ‘Stoner’, because it is humble and gorgeously sad. And J.M.Barrie’s ‘Peter Pan’, because it makes me feel like a child but also intensely mortal.
Fictional Role Model:
Shosanna from Inglorious Bastards, for obvious reasons.
What is Writing to You?
For me writing is the ultimate way to explore ideas, and through fiction I find that I can even give those ideas meaning. This, in the end, I believe can help us understand each other. Also, I’m a sucker for structure.
Five Themes I Am Passionate On Writing About:
Memory. Childhood. Death. Illusion vs Reality. Enlightenment.
